Singer “Tyla” whose DMs are always active tells us how she got her ‘Water’ hit (exclusive)

Singer Tyla‘s sexy song “Water” has been dripping in success ever since it dropped earlier this year.

“First of all it’s a banger, like it’s a crazy song,” Tyla, 21, tells PEOPLE of her Afrobeat-tinged breakout about a steamy romance, which climbed to No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The tune has been an even bigger winner on social media, with thousands of fans using it over their own videos and testing their skills with the Water Dance Challenge based on the star’s impressive moves in her music video.

“Even before the challenge started, before the video went viral, people were loving the song. But I think what really took it to the edge was my performance of it,” says Tyla. “I worked with my choreographer in South Africa and we made that dance and when I performed on stage I just threw water, like I didn’t even think about it.”

Most recently she dazzled Jimmy Fallon and his studio audience, making her American television debut performing “Water” live on The Tonight Show. It’s been a whirlwind year for the young South African star and she’s just getting started.

Here are five things to know about Tyla:

She was born Tyla Laura Seethal in Johannesburg, South Africa

Tyla, pronounced TIE-Luh, “grew up listening to Afrobeats, amapiano, house Kwaito and all of that,” says the singer of popular genres in her home country. “But also a lot of R&B and pop also played in my house and I looked up to a lot of R&B and pop artists.”

As for her American influences, “I really looked up to Michael Jackson as a performer specifically. I also looked up to Rihanna and Aaliyah as well.” But when it came time to figure out her own sound, she says, “I knew that I wanted my culture in it. I made my first amapiano song ‘Getting Late’ and added pop and R&B melodies to it. With ‘Water’ I’d describe it as the perfect blend. Being from South Africa is the reason why my sound is what it is.”

In school she studied mining engineering before focusing on music

“Music was always the plan, but when I consciously started working towards it, I was in my last year of high school,” says Tyla, who kickstarted her career by posting singing videos to social media. “I was studying and writing my final exams but every weekend I made sure to go to the studio and just record, experiment, shoot pictures and just go for it.”

That said, her parents weren’t always going for it. “When I finished school my parents asked me what I’m going to study and I told them immediately I want to go into music,” she says. “After a lot of convincing they allowed me to do just that.”

She has over 6 million TikTok followers, and loads of admirers

Tyla isn’t new to social media, but she’s the first to admit things have changed. “I grew up on social media,” she says. “Like maybe at age 12 or 13 I would borrow my father’s phone to make social media accounts. I wasn’t supposed to be on it at that age but I just fell in love with pictures and making videos and musical.ly.”

These days, after going viral with both of her singles, “I am starting to feel the pressure of social media now because the numbers are rising much faster and I just understand the influence that I have now,” she says. “I have to be more careful and use my platform right.”

As for wishful suitors shooting their shot and expressing interest in the beautiful star on social media: “My DMs are always active honey! I’m telling you, there’s always someone in there that I wouldn’t expect, so yeah, it’s booming!”

The viral music video for “Water” almost didn’t happen

Tyla fans can thank themselves for bringing “Water” to life on camera. “We weren’t actually going to shoot a video, and then the song just went viral,” explains Tyla. “We were like ‘Oh my word!’ We ended up working with [music video director] Child and I’ve always wanted to work with her so that was exciting. It was a little bit stressful, but I had so much fun on set.”

That didn’t stop the rising star from having jitters ahead of the video’s release. “I was so nervous,” she says, “like I literally couldn’t sleep. I was just waiting for it to drop. But after I saw the response was good it was such a relief. I just felt so much better after all that.”

When she’s not singing and dancing, she loves lounging and scrolling

“I love to just lay down,” says the star, “close the curtain, maybe go on TikTok. Sometimes I watch TV or when I’m at home I love to just chill with my family.”

For Tyla, there’s no place like home, and especially a particular place in her home. “We do this thing where we just sit on our parents’ bed and we just talk about anything and everything. That’s something that I really enjoy doing. Basically, I just chill.”

“CHLOE X HALLE” Of Musical Duo

Chloe and Halle are very much sisters, but they are not twins. Chloe Bailey was born July 1, 1998, and her younger sister Halle Bailey was born March 27, 2000. Considering they are less than two years apart, it’s no surprise that people might think they are twins. Not to mention, they play twins on grown-ish, Freeform’s spinoff of black-ish. In December, Halle opened up about what it’s like to play her older sister’s twin.

Me and Chloe, we feel like we’re twins all the time. Sometimes we forget that I’m the younger sister,” Halle told EW at the time. “We talk the same, we interrupt each other, and say the same thing when we’re watching shows all the time. It’s really trippy, but it’s a blast. She’s my best friend, and we just were really channeling ourselves for the characters, though it’s also our alter egos with their sassiness and attitude.”

In addition to the sisters’ joint foray into the acting world on grown-ish, Chloe and Halle are best known for their music career. The sisters first showed off their musical chops on YouTube as preteens. In March 2018, Chloe told TIME:

The very first YouTube cover we ever posted was to “Best Thing I Never Had” by Beyonce. I think I was 13 years old, and my sister was 11. We were in our basement; our older sister recorded it for us. We didn’t expect much; we were happy about the first 100 views.

Pretty quickly, their YouTube videos started going viral, and Chloe x Halle appeared on The Ellen Show, Chloe told TIME. Then, in 2012, they won Radio Disney’s Next BIG Thing Competition, Oh My Disney reported. Since then, they have continued making music, releasing an EP in 2013, another in 2016, and then their first full mixtape, The Two of Us, in 2017.

This past March, they finally released their first full studio album, The Kids Are Alright, Pitchfork reported. They made headlines for their hands-on approach, with Chloe producing most of the album, and with both young women working on all of the songs. Halle opened up about the importance of her and Chloe having autonomy over the album in a March interview. She told Vulture:

Our parents always taught us from a young age that we can do anything we put our minds to and not to be afraid to dive in to do something that may not be considered things for little girls to be doing. My sister is so inspiring to me when she produces. And we write all of our songs from our living room. It’s fun for us.

Exclusive One on One with Chrys no i

“Chrys no i” (Pronounced Chris know eye) who hails from Philadelphia is a highly talented hip- hop/R& B artist. He started making music at the age of 15, but has basically listened to music all through his years, after picking up interest through his mum, as she used to sing and write music, thus, horning his skills.

His latest work “Dream of” talks about loving a girl who in turn does not necessarily reciprocate the love by being in love with someone else which is succinctly captured by the lines “everyone’s eyes on you, I wanna be your world, let’s go round the world, you are my type, I wanna be with you”.

But the appeal falls on deaf ears as captured by the closing statement “I guess this is not the life that she dreamed of”.

The video was directed by Tristan Seyek and featured Julie Reyes as Valentina who was his love interest in the song and Ian Bratwit as Larry (Valentina’s lover).
We got a chance to do a one on one exclusive interview with  Chrys and here is what he had to say below:

Q: Where are you from and where are you based?
A: I am from and based in Philadelphia, PA, USA

Q: At What age did you start making music?
A: I started making music at age 15, but I’ve been around music since I was a baby because my mom used to sing and write songs.

Q: What genre of music do you love? Or what genre would you consider yourself? (e.g- Rock? Blues? Hip-Hop? RnB?)
A: I love all genres of music, from hip-hop/rap/trap and R&B, to Urban Latin, to dance/pop and alternative music. However, my music is more hip-hop/R&B with slight trap & pop influences.

Q: Tell us about your latest track or Video ( what is it all about)—–Please explain the concept or message behind it:
A: In short, “Dream Of” is about having a crush on someone who is already in a relationship with a loser (hahaha), and just professing your love or interest to that potential lover.

Q: Who wrote it?
A:. I wrote and produced the song. I made & sequenced the beat within an hour. I then wrote the hook in 10 minutes while eating dinner (inspiration and creativity really hit me at random times). Eventually, I finished writing the entire song.

Q: What inspired you to write this new track
A: We all know someone who is in a relationship with a scrub. I actually know a few people whom are in that situation, and after I made the beat, the hook came out of now where, And the rest is history.

Q: Where do you get your musical inspiration?
A: General inspiration just comes to me, to be honest. As a record producer, I’m inspired by Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, Diddy, Swiss Beatz, The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams & Chad Hugo), Timbaland and Danjahandz. As an artist/songwriter, I’m inspired by Michael Jackson, Kanye West, The-Dream, Frank Ocean, Jhene Aiko, and Drake.

Q: If you were given a chance, which Artist would you love to perform with?
A: I’d love to perform with Bad Bunny.
